It was a mistake and because all of the guitars serial numbers were placed in numerical order of build completion and final assembly, that he couldn’t have the serial number plates redone and had to simply use the 6 digit serial numbers that started with a 0, unless he wanted some being made out of order serial number wise. I was told Leo didn’t order the plates to come with a 0 and 6 digit serial number. With my serial number starting with a 0, #026099, instead of just #26099, I was also told at that time that not only were the guitars serial numbers done so in numerical order as they were completed and finished being assembled, but that only a handful of the 58’ Strats had the 0 as the starting number and also, as a result, made those guitars have 6 digits as opposed to the normal 5 digits like most other 58’ Strats do.

When I bought my 58’ Strat a few months ago and started learning as much as I could about them, I was told the serial numbers were the last things added at final assembly and were placed in numeric order as each guitar was finished being assembled. I must have been told the wrong thing then.
